Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What photo should I send?
It’s best to send a selection of good, clear photographs, indicating the best one. For any other photography questions, please click on photography tips.

  2. How long does it take to get the finished portrait?
The rule of thumb is to estimate 3-4 weeks. This will depend on time of year (Christmas is an especially busy time) and difficulty of subject and background.

  3. Do you use a spray fixative on the pet portrait?
I do use a spray fixative to the portraits. This is done very lightly and sparingly so that the color and texture is not affected. Still, you have to handle pastels carefully. Store the portrait horizontally with nothing pressing on top of it until it's framed.

  4. How do you ship the portraits?
I wrap the pet portrait very carefully with bubble wrap and then put it snugly in a box and mark "this end up". I haven't had a problem with shipping at all. What you want to avoid is turning the portrait upside down. That's a no-no, but it's also not the end of the world. What happens is extra pastel will fall off. If the plastic wrap is still on it, it will just catch there.

  5. Why is my portrait mislabeled on the PortraitsOfPets.com web pages?
That's an oops. The web page is updated using existing code, and sometimes my web-lackey (husband) forgets to change some of the copied code. If you see a mistake, please email me and I'll get it corrected ASAP. Sometimes, we'll catch the mistake when we proofread the newly uploaded pictures/pages and it's corrected within a few minutes.

  6. How should I frame my portrait?
I put spacers between the mat and the backing so that any extra pastel that falls goes between the mat and the backing instead of on the front of the mat. I use foam board (1/16" inch) or heavy cardboard as spacers. I cut it so that it outlines the mat, cut just under the "window" of the mat (usually 1/2-1"). If you're in the Pittsburgh area and want to frame the portrait yourself, I can show you in person how to do this. It's sounds tiresome, but it goes fast. I have a mat cutter, so I can do it quickly.

  7. Can I order over the internet?
Yes, you can. You can place an order by phone or email and send your photo through email.

  8. Can I order by mail?
Absolutely! You will need to send the photos and deposit (30%) to:

    Cheryl Kelley

    Pittsburgh, PA 15234

  9. How is the order sent?
It will be sent in a cushioned, sturdy box to your address.

  10. How is payment collected?
I ask for 30% of the cost as a down payment. Upon completion, I will send you the completed portrait with an invoice for the remainder of the cost.
